In October 2023, a major new version of xARIS was completed, significantly expanding the system’s regulatory capabilities.
Building on the first xARIS version, the release introduced three additional modules — INSPECTION, OCCUDOSE, and RADEVENTS — and integrated them with the existing RASOD, LICENSEE, AUTHORIZATION, and ADMINISTRATION functionality.
The result was a broader integrated platform supporting key regulatory activities within a common information environment.
Three New Regulatory Modules
The October 2023 release introduced three major functional areas to xARIS.
INSPECTION & ENFORCEMENT
The INSPECTION & ENFORCEMENT module was developed to support the management of regulatory inspection activities.
The module provides functionality for maintaining inspection-related information, documenting inspection activities and results, and supporting regulatory oversight processes.
Its integration with existing xARIS data allows regulatory users to use information on licensees, facilities, and radiation sources when managing inspection activities.
OCCUDOSE
The new OCCUDOSE module introduced functionality for the management and regulatory oversight of occupational exposure information.
The module was designed to support the management of personnel and occupational dose records and to provide reporting and statistical capabilities for dose information.
OCCUDOSE is connected with relevant xARIS data, allowing licensee and source-related information to be used across regulatory processes.
RADEVENTS
The RADEVENTS module was introduced to support the recording and management of radiation events.
The module enables regulatory users to maintain information related to incidents and unauthorized activities involving radioactive materials and to manage associated event information within xARIS.
Together, these modules extended xARIS into new areas of regulatory oversight. The report identifies the development of the three modules, including translation fields, report pages, flexible and single reports, and statistical functionality.
An Integrated Regulatory Information Environment
A key objective of the release was not simply to add new modules, but to ensure that the modules functioned together as part of one system.
The database structures developed during the first and second phases of xARIS development were integrated into a common database environment. Existing data from RASOD, LICENSEE, and AUTHORIZATION could be migrated into the integrated structure.
Interactions between modules were also established to allow relevant regulatory information to be used across different processes.
For example, radiation source information from RASOD can be referenced by INSPECTION and OCCUDOSE, while licensee information can be used by INSPECTION, OCCUDOSE, and RADEVENTS.
This approach reduces the need to repeatedly enter the same information and supports continuity of regulatory data across xARIS modules.
Consistent Design Across xARIS Modules
The new modules were developed using the same general design principles established for the first xARIS version.
INSPECTION, OCCUDOSE, and RADEVENTS were integrated into the existing xARIS interface while receiving their own module colors, icons, and visual identification.
Module-specific colors were applied to icons, buttons, and selected records to help users identify the working environment while maintaining a consistent overall interface.
A unified dashboard and common navigation structure were also used to provide access to all integrated modules.
Expanded Reporting, Statistics, and Customization
The release expanded system-wide functionality to support the newly introduced modules.
General data tables and customization pages were developed for INSPECTION, OCCUDOSE, and RADEVENTS. Reporting pages were added for the new modules, and related options were integrated into user management and system administration.
The new modules also included reporting and statistical functionality, supporting the structured use and analysis of regulatory information.
These developments extended the common xARIS approach to reporting, customization, and data management across the expanded system.
ADMINISTRATION Module Completed
The October 2023 release also completed the development of the ADMINISTRATION functionality for the integrated xARIS system.
Administrative functions were finalized to support system-wide management of users, permissions, settings, and common functionality across the modules.
The new module options were incorporated into user management, helping administrators control access to the expanded xARIS functionality.
Integrated Testing and Release
Before release, the combined Phase I and Phase II developments underwent testing focused on module functionality, data flow, integration, user experience, and overall system performance.
The testing process included unit testing, integration testing, user acceptance testing, bug resolution, release preparation, and deployment activities.
Issues and inconsistencies identified during testing were addressed as part of the preparation of the integrated version for release.
Expanding the Scope of xARIS
The October 2023 release marked an important stage in the development of xARIS.
With the addition of INSPECTION, OCCUDOSE, and RADEVENTS, xARIS expanded beyond the core management of radiation sources, licensees, and authorizations to support a broader range of regulatory activities.
The release established the integrated module structure that forms the basis of the current xARIS system.
